Hungary Pride Ban 2025: A New Crackdown on LGBTQ+ Freedom

Hungary has taken another drastic step backward for LGBTQ+ rights. On March 18, the government passed a law that effectively bans Pride events, citing a controversial 2021 “child protection” law as justification. The new Hungary Pride Ban 2025 has triggered international outcry, fierce debates in the European Parliament, and rising fear among the LGBTQ+ community.
What Is the Hungary Pride Ban 2025?
The law prohibits public events—like Pride—that portray "divergence from sex at birth, gender transition, or homosexuality." It builds on Hungary’s 2021 anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, which already restricted LGBTQ+ content for minors. Now, it goes further by restricting freedom of assembly itself.
To make matters worse, the law enables AI-powered facial recognition to monitor and fine Pride participants.
EU and UN Condemn the Ban
The European Commission has warned that Hungary is violating fundamental EU laws. Over 70 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are heading to Budapest in solidarity, while the UN Human Rights Office has urged Hungary to repeal the ban immediately.
In a powerful statement, MEP Iratxe Garcia called it:
“An outright European shame... a cowardly attack, an instrument of fear and censorship.”
Why the Hungary Pride Ban 2025 Matters
This isn’t just about one parade. The Hungary Pride Ban 2025 is part of a broader authoritarian shift—silencing LGBTQ+ voices, restricting visibility, and fueling homophobia through state law.
The European Court of Human Rights has ruled in past cases that banning Pride events violates freedom of expression and assembly. Yet Hungary moves ahead.
Hungary’s opposition-led capital, Budapest, is fighting back. Mayor Gergely Karácsony has offered to act as official organizer of the event—a legal move that could bypass police refusal. But it remains a tense legal battle.
Our Position at LesbianGlobal

LesbianGlobal stands with the EuroCentralAsian Lesbian Community and other civil society organizations, urging the EU to condemn Hungary's actions and uphold fundamental rights. We unequivocally denounce the Orban government's egregious attempt to suppress Pride.
We demand immediate and decisive legal action from the EU to address this flagrant disregard for the principles of freedom, equality, and non-discrimination. The commission's response must reflect the gravity of this assault on civil liberties.
