The Lesbian Economic Empowerment: What It Looks Like in Everyday Life

Economic empowerment is often discussed in reports and funding proposals. For many lesbian, bisexual, and queer women, however, it is much more practical. It is about having the ability to earn, decide, and live without depending on anyone for survival.

Lesbian economic empowerment focuses on creating the conditions where LBQ+ women can gain skills, earn income, and make decisions about their lives with greater independence. The LesbianGlobal Economic Empowerment Fund was created to support this kind of change. Through grants and partnerships, the fund helps grassroots organizations in the Global South provide skills training, tools, and support that can improve the economic situation of LBQ+ women.

What Lesbian Economic Empowerment Looks Like in Everyday Life

Here are some realistic examples of what lesbian economic empowerment can look like for LBQ+ women supported through this kind of work:

1. Learning a skill that can generate income: An LBQ+ woman completes training in web design, graphic design, tailoring, or photography. She begins taking small jobs. The income may not be steady at first, but it gives her something she can leverage to start earning more.

2. Having the tools to work: After training, some women receive basic equipment such as a sewing machine, camera, or laptop. This removes the need to constantly borrow tools or wait for permission before working.

3. Gaining more decision-making power: When an LBQ+ woman has even a small source of income, she often has more room to make decisions about her safety, housing, and relationships. Economic dependence frequently limits these choices.

4. Building confidence through work: Completing client work, earning money, or running a small service can slowly build confidence. This confidence often extends beyond income into other areas of their lives.

These are practical steps that many of our grantee partners are working toward through skills training and various support programs.

Why Lesbian Economic Empowerment Works

Many general women’s economic programs do not fully reach lesbian women. Discrimination, family rejection, and safety concerns create additional barriers. Targeted support for lesbian economic empowerment remains necessary.
